Presentation of Evaluation
After completing my evaluation questions, I had the task of presenting this to my Media Studies class. To do this I had to think carefully of what I was going to say, and the timing for which I was going to do this too. Over-all, it was a successful pitch, where I was able to express the strengths, weaknesses and procedures that occurred during the course. Below are a few images of my presenting my work;
Editing My Footage
After going out and filming my music video I had the task of putting the footage together to make the actual video. To edit this I used Adobe Premiere Pro.
Below is my editing process;
My first job when editing my footage was to get the footage into my working area. To do this I had to import the clips using the import option in the file drop down
I then had this window appear, as shown, where I just had to search for my files and select them to import.
I had to do this with both my video clips and the soundtrack.
Once these were selected I just had to wait for them to load. This took quite a while due to the amount of footage that I had collected.
I then simply had to drag in the piece of music that my music video was going to be supporting. once it was dragged to the correct position I was then able to let go and it would turn to a neon green, showing it was set in place as shown below.
Once my sound was in place, I had to start editing my footage and dragging that into the project. I did this by cutting it down using the central window then dragging is down into the project.
I later had a clip that I thought I wanted to use. It was a panning shot but the speed was too fast and therefore I wanted to slow it down to try and see if it was a good match to the sequence.
I did this by right clicking on the chosen clip and selecting speed/duration. Then a small window pops up where I can alter the speed to whatever is appropriate. However, this clip was later deleted due to the lack of steadiness.
I wanted to add some text to my video at the start so to do this I needed to make a title. I therefore clicked on the drop down option of 'Title' then hovered over 'New Title' and then selected 'Default Still'
Once I had done that, a new window had appeared where I could enter my text as I wanted and then I was able move it to where I wanted it.
Once all that my filming was edited with the correct text and sequences, I had to export the movie so that it would render. This tied all loose edges and enabled me to move it as an entire movie and not a selection of clips.

Planning: Casting
For my cast, I am only looking for one male character to play the part of my artist. This person that I choose could be make or break for my project. The character needs to be someone that is first and foremost dependable. If they are someone that frequently needs to change dates then this will make my workload harder and could rush me for time. Secondly, they need to look the part for this song. For example, I do not want some one to look like the local undesirables, I need a person with a particular presence that people can associate to this type of music, with a look to match. This will include an up-to-date wardrobe and hair cut. Finally, the person who I have to act must be comfortable with acting in front of a camera, lip-syncing and following my instruction.
Below are a few options that I have with my cast;

Courtney is a good candidate as he listens to this type of music and can therefore relate to the character that I am trying to create. He has a dress sense similar to the one that I am try replicate so that is another bonus. His hair cut is similar to Ben Howard, so his image is not an issue.
An issue that I have with Courtney is that he can be rather unreliable with his current lifestyle. He works during the day on weekdays and likes to go out on weekends and is reluctant to give this up. This could be a big issue if I was to cast him.

Planning: Location
When considering all these things and looking at my treatment for my music video, I based my animatic around one particular old building for the most part. This is a half-ruined building that can be 'explored' by my artist throughout the video with opportunity to climb etc. Below are a few images of the building that I have taken;

There is also another half to my video that involves a wood area, with a field nearby too. Fortunately for me, the building is round the back side of a field which is surrounded by a woodland area. This is very ideal for my project as I can get to both locations easily from each other. These areas are not too far from the main town so they should be easily accessible for me and my actor.
Planning: Lighting
As I am filming outside throughout the whole video, I have very limited control over the lighting, so I must make use of every opportunity I have when filming.
Due to the time of year that I am going to be filming my video (winter time) it gets very dark very quickly. Although I wanted to film with a sunset at parts and with the sun behind trees etc. I may need to change this part of the planning to account for the light changing and also with the weather conditions.
I will probably have to try and film in one session if possible and will therefore need a large amount of time to do this. With this in my mind, I will probably need to have a whole day to film in so that I have the day light on my side. Other than the day light, I have no other specific requirements for lighting apparatus. I am relying heavily of the weather conditions being good enough for me to film through out one day. I will regularly check the weather when it comes towards filming.

Planning: Costume
When looking at the costume of my actor in the music video I need to look at how well it links in with my chosen genre and also my chosen artist. The costume is very important to the success of my music video as it will set the tone and therefore my audience will be able to identify themselves with the artist and the genre. For example, if a music video for a heavy metal band had the actors dressed in tweed suits, the audience would not identify themselves with the band would discard the music video. The same applies for the characters in my music video, there is no point in my folk artist wearing a backwards baseball cap and jogging bottoms.

Planning: Costume
Now that I have my main character cast, I need to decide what he will wear during the video. This piece of planning, like any other, is very important however, the costume could set the whole tone of the video. As this song is of a folk genre, the clothing that I choose for my character to wear must fit that genre and appeal to the target audience. When I looked at some existing folk bands, I found that there were some common themes in how they dress and so I would like to recreate these sorts of characters.
The first item that I found to be popular within this genre of music and it's target audience is a check shirt. This item has cropped up a few times during my research and so I feel it is vitally important that I include it in my video. The shirt has been used in a variety of ways, with it being buttoned up for some, while it is open for others. Some have had the sleeves down while others have rolled them up. As Ben is quite a young artist and appeals to a younger target audience, I feel that having the shirt open with the sleeves rolled up would be the best idea.
Now that this has been decided, I will need a t-shirts to go underneath this unbuttoned shirt. Quite often I see people wearing a shirt like this, and underneath they have a plain whit t-shirt. These two pieces would go together quite nicely, and would most definitely appeal to the target audience.
On the bottom half of my character, I feel that a pair of jeans would be ideal. Although my artist is of the folk genre, he is heavily linked into the charts and therefore his appearance should suit both of them sides. A pair of normal black jeans along with a pair of pumps would appeal to both of these target audiences.

Planning: Key Stages
As I move away from the researching stages for my promotional misc video, below are the sections that I must complete in the planning stages before production of the video. These will enable me to produce the best music video, with characters and locations that fit the tone of the song, along with the requirements of my target audience. The first job for me to do is to establish an order that I will work in. Below is the order that I plan to carry out these tasks:
- Casting
- Location
- Costume
- Lighting
- Shot list
- Filming schedule
The first jobs in to establish my cast and the location. This can be done at similar times. I can have a selection of possible cast members for whom I can take to the proposed location. Here I can trial the cast members to see if they are good in front of the camera and are confident to fulfil the role of Ben Howard. Also, I can test to see if the location is suitable for the image that I am trying to present to my target audience about the song. I shall also look at the weather conditions with in this section of planning, as my location may be an outdoor space. If and/or when I am happy with the location and my chosen cast member, I can start to look at mise-en-scene. This include the costumes, props and the lighting. The costume of my character is a key part in the success of any music video. This is because my target audience will be needing to relate to the character so if the cast are dressed wrong, then they may not feel that this video is for them.
Finally, when these details are finished and secured, I must look at the planning of filming. This will include a shot list where I will finalise what shot I wish to include in my video. Then In will need a filming schedule. This will take into account the availability of myself, the cast and also the weather conditions. When this is all complete, filming should be able to start.
Planning: Animatic
An animatic is similar to a storyboard, however, it is in video form. This has enabled me to see if my sequence of shots is correct and will work cohesively with the song that I have selected.

Usually, this would be done on a large piece of paper with a number of boxes following each other where I can then draw the action happening.

Research: What Is An Animatic?
An animatic is similar to a storyboard, however, it is presented in video form. This means that the key frames that have been drawn into the storyboard are separated from eachother and placed into a sequenced video. When looking at an animatic for a music video, this sequence is presented with the song in the background. This enables the creator of the animatic to cut the clips together to match the song, giving the viewer a more accurate representation of what the final music video will look like.

Research: Why Do We Need To Storyboard?
Before I am able to start creating my storyboard for my music video, I must first understand what a storyboard is, why I need one and how to create one. To do this, I had a quick search on the internet which led me to a video on Youtube which I have embedded below;
To summarise, the video explains that for successful media product to be created, it must be planned extremely well in advance. Storyboarding in a key part of that as it gives the constructor of the product a clear visual representation of their idea, enabling them to make changes along the way. This also allows the creator to keep continuity through out the product - all in all, storyboarding is a good idea.

Planning: Music Video Treatment For 'Keep Your Head Up' by Ben Howard

My music video will use a mixture of performance and narrative. The main idea of the song is that a young male has come out of a relationship and is finding himself. This means that I will use one male character going out and doing the fun things now that he is 'free'. This is not to send out that he is happy, but to show that he is making the best of a bad situation. At certain points, the character will be using narrative to get across the emotions in some particular lyrics. My desired locations for this video include an open field for the majority, but with an old and half demolished building as well for the character to be climbing and walking through, exploring. This will give reference to him finding himself.
Treatment
The song Keep Your Head Up is one about the stages after a break up with a partner. The song is very slow in places to show the sadness about the situation however, in later stages and during the chorus, the dynamics rapidly increase to demonstrate the character getting over the break up and moving. This does not show happiness, just excitement. The music video that I plan to create will demonstrate these moods accordingly. Further from this, as Ben Howard is a reasonably lesser-known artist, the focus will be on the character of Ben to enable promotion of the act. The narrative will be important to this as people watching the video will be able to link a voice to a face and therefore a name and not just recognise the voice without knowing the performers name as is so very common.
Over-all the video will be mostly performance and visual based, giving the audience the opportunity to match the acting of the character to a particular mood and therefore allowing them to understand what the character is feeling. The video is telling a story, so the visuals should be able to do this even without the lyrics or music in the background.
To start with, the main character will be walking along an open field. This is to demonstrate moving into the emptiness. The time of day will be around 6 o'clock in the evening, where the sun begins to set. I would like to get the low sun in the background of the characters legs walking. The character will be walking through this field alone for a while, being shown at many angles, for the duration of the slower section. As the song speeds up slightly, the character will approach the remains of an old building, climbing up onto it and exploring it. This will give the idea of exploration now that he is no longer in a relationship. Throughout these slower parts of the song, I will not have the character singing at all - this will all be performance based.
When we come to the chorus, the artist will be singing the lyrics throughout. During this, i will have the character sitting down on part of the building, and it will be filmed looking at the character from different angles and shots - I will have a long shot as well as an extreme close up of the character, for example.
As the song slows back down, the tone of the video will drop slightly but still be at a faster tempo than any verses before. This will leave the character to have an attitude much better to what he had at the start, walking around with his head higher. He will then continue to talk along a long path through a forest leading to an area surrounded in small hills. This will then enable the character to do some more climbing and running etc. to pick up the tempo of the song. Again, there will be no singing in this section until the chorus. Here, the character will be standing on the hills, giving off a more positive attitude. The camera will this time be looking up at the boy, showing power and resilience while he sings this chorus. However, just after this, the boy's face will drop and he will proceed to sit down with a glum look on his face. The two line verse will show the realisation of the situation, and the character will sing to this looking rather sad.
The verse continues with backing lyrics repeatedly saying 'keep your head up, keep your heart strong' getting faster and louder each time. With each time it's said, the character's mood will pick up and he will eventually stand back up, ready to sing the final chorus with every last piece of aggression. The same two lines that were sang previously are repeated but this time, they are sang with confidence and not sadness.

Planning: APP Challenge
In preparation for my music video, I was set a task which would help to improve my editing skills when using Adobe Premiere Pro (APP). The task was to try and recreate an appropriate music video for the song Wings by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The original video is below:
The sound track was given to us in full, while the real music video had been cut up into chunks and put into a folder. The task was to then take these small pieces of film and to put them in an order which matched the song. The idea was not to make the original video at full length, but a slightly different one that included at least one piece of lip-syncing and using the clips that fitted the backing music. Although it may be a bit of fun, the key was to develop my editing skills. The video that I made is below along with a picture of me editing it together:
During the video, I have used multiple clips for lip-syncing. This was probably the hardest part of the challenge, as the timing has to be perfect. In this, the timing is okay but is slightly out so that would be something that I need to work on, however, it is not a major issue. Also, I have used clips that match the lyrics, for example there is a line that says "I stepped outside" and I have the boy walking outside his house. Another example is the line "it's gunna make me fly". I have then got a clip of the young boy jumping to try and touch the net while this is being said. This was a lot easier to accomplish because the clips were long enough to cover the whole ones, whereas if the lines were a lot longer, the clips may cut off before the end. In my final piece of work, however, I will be creating the film myself and therefore I can be in control of this. Finally, I made sure that some of the clips matched the sound of the music. In a clip later on in the video, the boy bounces the basketball just as the music drops down, The ball hits the floor as this happens, thus giving the impression that he is in control of the music. This was easy to control in the video, and when I make my one, it won't be a problem as I can create clips that replicate this sort of edit.
Research: Initial Audience Research
Adam is a 17 year old student from Kettering. Music is his main priority in life, and where ever he is, he is not without headphones. Listening to his favourite music artists gets him through day-to-day life with out any problems.
Adam has a huge passion for live music in particular. Although he is a lover of big music festivals and gigs of all of his favourite artists, he also enjoys the local talent playing in his local pubs and clubs. The idea of a group of people being connected by a single song makes him feel fantastic. His favourite genres of music are Folk and Rock. He is a big fan of the up-and-coming Ben Howard. Although this is his main preference, he is not one to turn down a chance to see a pop artist. His interest in modern music is monumental, however, he will not shy away from the likes of The Beatles.
Adam is a student at a local sixth form, so when he needs time to relax he will listen to some of his favourite tracks. Similarly, when he needs to get his head down and work, the earphones will go back in. He has a job at a local supermarket, stacking shelves. He is known by colleagues to 'hum' to a song that is on the speakers. All the money that he earns from his part time job is used to feed his addiction for music.
If the money is not spent on festivals and live gigs along with music from iTunes, he will be buying the latest pieces of equipment for his computer, which he uses mainly for study, but also to stream music and watch films online via Netflix. Most people would call Adam a 'money waster' but in his opinion, he spends his money in the most sensible way for anybody.
Research: Chosen Lyric Analysis
"I spent my time, watching

Here he is speaking about how he has watched them grow apart and he has stressed about how he feels second best in her life. And after all of this stress and after all the heart break is gone, he can finally let his scars heal and let himself be alone to try to embrace the emptiness of not having her anymore, or 'darkness' as he refers to it.

Here he's talking about the next chapter in his life (walking down the mountain/turning tides) and how there may be obstacles like 'wind' and 'heat' but there will be happiness again because he realizes as he's making his way down the mountain in his life, that all along he wasn't searching for someone to complete him, but rather he was searching for who he really was.

Here he's just saying no matter the pain your going through in your life keep your head up and keep moving forward with your mind set on the important things because it will get better. And lastly here he is saying no matter what happens, how much pain he is in or that she is in, he will have a memory of her that will never be tainted but he will know that there was always 'demons of change' that made the relationship unsuccessful.
The spaces that have grown between us.

Here he is speaking about how he has watched them grow apart and he has stressed about how he feels second best in her life. And after all of this stress and after all the heart break is gone, he can finally let his scars heal and let himself be alone to try to embrace the emptiness of not having her anymore, or 'darkness' as he refers to it.
